Tanker 1
was built using an old gasoline tanker truck. It is a 1967 C/50 Chevrolet truck
powered by a Chevrolet 327 engine with a 4-speed manual transmission. The tank is a
1,000 gallon tank that was built by Newberry Equipment Company in Memphis, Tennessee in
February 1957. It was retrofitted with a 10" Newton Quick Dump valve to haul
water to rural fires. The 1,000 gallon of water is dumped from this truck into a
portable tank through the Newton Quick Dump valve in sixty (60) seconds. This truck
was completely refinished with five (5) gallons of red Du Pont Imron paint. Like the
rest of our fleet, communications is provided via a Motorola radio which is capable of
communicating with all of the fire departments in Obion County. This truck was
added to our fleet for the sole purpose of hauling water to fires outside the city.
Tanker 1 responds to out-of-town fires along with a pumper. Once on the fire scene,
Tanker 1's 1,600 gallon portable dump tank is set-up beside a pumper. The 1,000
gallon of water carried by Tanker 1 is dumped into this tank and then Tanker 1 returns to
town, hooks to a fire plug to refill its tank and then returns to the fire scene with
another 1,000 gallons of water. This routine will continue as long as there is a
need for water at the fire scene. The 1,600 gallon portable tank is carried in the
polished aluminum compartment seen underneath the rear of the truck.Odometer reading as of: March 10, 1999 142,114 miles March 10, 2000 142,181 miles |
