Smith Foodtown Fire 02/01/78Smith's Foodtown --  February 1, 1978

Located on the south side of Troy's beautiful town square this fire occurred during the early morning hours of a bitter-cold February night .  Below freezing temperatures and an ice covered snow on the ground made this an extremely difficult fire to fight.  The Union City Fire Department responded with their aerial  ladder truck.  Despite TFD's best efforts, this building was a total lost; however, the buildings on each side received only minor damage.  After being cleaned-up, the property remained vacant until 1995.  Today, it's the site of the Troy City Hall.  Pictured is Chief Everett J. Watson.  Chief Watson served as Mayor from 1977 until 1983 and served as Fire Chief from 1950 until 1995.  After his retirement in 1995, his son Mark Watson, was appointed Fire Chief.  The first Chief Watson passed away on January 5, 2002 at the age of 76.  After his death, W.G. Scott, who served as Assistant Fire Chief from 1950 until 1996, gave this newspaper clipping to Mark.  W.G. Scott and Everett J. Watson were life-long friends.  Scott operated Scott's Grocery on the north side of the square and Watson operated Troy Service Station on the south side.  They both were in business for over forty (40) years.  They worked together, hunted together, served in city government together and devoted their entire adult life to the Troy Fire Department.
