TROY'S TORNADO WARNING SYSTEM

Officially Placed Into Service March 11, 2006

Weekly Test: Please be advised this System will be activated each Saturday at noon...

For nearly 40 years, it was affectionately referred to as the “fire whistle”.  From this day forward, it will become known as Troy’s Tornado Warning System.  The Town of Troy is officially announcing the implementation of a Tornado Warning System that will be activated when the National Weather Service issues a Tornado Warning for Obion County.

When a tornado threatens Obion County, the system will be remotely activated by the 911 Dispatch Center utilizing radio control signals.  To ensure it’s always in operational status, this system will be tested each Saturday at 12:00 P.M.  When activated, the siren system will cycle on/off ten (10) times over a two (2) minute period.

The old “fire whistle” has a long history as an official notification device.  Until its retirement in 1985, it proudly and distinctively notified firemen to the call of duty.  It was replaced by technology in 1985 when a VHF radio communication & pager system was installed.

We’re certain it will equally distinguish itself in its new role as a Tornado Warning System.
